A mixture of Global Care and Liquid Soap
11th December. Cathy's blog.
After two very busy days running Kid's Clubs, today is a 'rest' day.
A slower start, a more leisurely breakfast and this morning half the team stayed at the hotel to relax, regroup, take stock, and look forward to visiting some of the families supported by Global Care in the afternoon. The rest of us climbed into the bus.
Our journey unfolded green hills, lush vegetation, banana trees, large and small houses increasingly widespread, until we began to walk up rocky, red paths to small clearings.
3 visits, 3 girls on sponsorship programmes. 3 situations, all precarious to varying degrees. A ten year old left alone to do chores, a fourteen year old orphan being brought up by a guardian and a child looked after by her grandmother. All three children, through smiles of joy, told us about their favourite parts of the camp day. (Some other children had been kept at home to do chores or dig their land instead of being allowed to join us.)
Global Care supports families so the children can go to school. One girl used her notebook gift from yesterday to write Chemistry notes to make liquid soap. She showed us her work, then the green soap was produced to our amazement. This same child had learnt to make shoes at school too.
We all learnt so much today from these wonderful people. They are inspirational.
We were welcomed by everyone, and shown how Global Care's projects make a difference. A small solar light means homework can be done after dark, exams can be passed, and progress made to a brighter future. It is a joy and privilege to be here.
