Global Care and The Steering Committee

December 10th 2024... Blog from Clare

Today was our second day of
Kids clubs in Runkungiri at St Paul’s Primary School. It was another hot day.
Today was a special day as about 10 children attended with disabilities who are supported by Global Care.
It was wonderful to see Tom and Barbara making sure that they were integrated into all the activities during the course of the day with the team working alongside them.
A particular highlight was seeing the children with disabilities looking very sombre and then their faces breaking out into a beautiful smile and laughing at the antics of the adults! E.g dancing! The Macarena and Hokey Cokey were firm favourites!
One child (I will call him Timothy) was having a great time banging the large drum with a stick and narrowly missing Steve’s fingers drumming with him!

It was so good to see the parents of the disabled children engaging with them as they played games with the parachute, puppets and craft activities.

Today was also a different day because the children/ young people were older and able to speak more English. They are also very polite, respectful and happy to let off steam and play fun activities. The young people have high aspirations and talked about becoming dentists, air hostesses and lawyers.

At the end of a long day we returned to our hotel on the coaster bus. Our driver has been superb- avoiding cattle, boda bodas, people and deep holes in the steep hilly dirt tracks. Unfortunately despite "guidance" from his passengers, he was not on form today as he tried to reverse through the gateway at an oblique angle trying many times and scraping the gateposts. At this point the “steering  committee” of 8 local onlookers came to his “aid”! They started to give him instructions on which way to turn the steering wheel!

Apart from seeing for ourselves how committed Global Care is to supporting vulnerable children, especially those with disabilities, we learnt something else! That the white mzungu are hopeless dancers!!
